In the first one-and- half-month period of 2012-13 marketing year that started from October, the sugar production stood at 9.84 lakh tonnes, as per the report compiled by Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). The report highlights that mills have produced two lakh tonnes more sugar as the production stood at 7.76 lakh tonne in the same period a year-ago.

This higher production is mainly due to higher crushing in mills in the state of Karnataka. So far this year the sugar mills in Karnataka have already produced 4.20 lakh tonnes of sugar compared to 2.37 lakh tonnes in the same period last year.

Across the country only 178 mills had started crushing operations compared to 215 mills in the year-ago period, as on November 15, 2012. Of which 93 mills were under operation in the country’s largest sugar producing state, Maharashtra, instead of 95 mills in the last year, while in Karnataka state, 49 mills had started crushing operation against 48 in the year-ago period.

On the other hand in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s second biggest sugar producing state, only three mills were operating against 43 sugar mills in the same period last year. The delay in crushing operation was mainly because of Diwali festival.

For the current marketing year, ISMA has anticipated that the country’s total sugar output would stand at 240 lakh tonnes against 260 lakh tonnes in 2011-12.
