Major crop production likely to drop by 2.8% in 2012-13: CMIE

Production of major crops is likely to fall by 2.8% in 2012-13 due to lower acreage, as per the economic think tank CMIE. It has revised its production estimates downward from earlier estimate of 2.3% decline. With the kharif sowing acreage turning out to be lower than expected, production of rice is projected to fall by 3.4% in 2012-13 as its acreage dropped by 4.1% to 375 lakh hectares as on Nov 2. As sowing failed to pick pace, rice production is expected to be limited to 100.8 million tonne in 2012-13.

Wheat output is likely to fall by 0.1% to 93.8 million tonne, coarse cereals production likely to decline by 9.8% to 37.6 million tonne; bajra may record steepest dip of 28.4% adding that Rabi sowing of the food grain was yet to be initiated by Nov 2. In Rajasthan, the major producing state of bajra, observed irregular rainfall during June-August affecting the cultivation. Kharif sowing of bajra was carried out on 60.8 lakh hectares as on Oct19, short by 24.8%.

CMIE anticipates bajra production to decline to 7.2 million tonne in 2012-13 from 10.1 million tonne previous year. Production of pulses like green gram, horse gram and miscellaneous pulses is expected to drop by 1.5% to 16.9 million tonne in FY13.
